Your Local, Family-Owned Automotive Workshop At Car Service Canberra, we believe looking after cars is about more than servicing and repairs. It is about looking after the people who trust us with them.

Jake and Monique purchased N & D Auto Services in November 2018 and, over the past eight years, have gradually built the business into what is now widely known as Car Service Canberra. We still trade under both names, but today most of our customers know us as Car Service Canberra.

We are a small, family-owned and locally operated workshop in Mitchell, providing quality mechanical services to the wider Mitchell community, including Watson, Hackett, Dickson, Harrison, Franklin, Casey, Lyneham, Gungahlin, Palmerston, Nicholls, Belconnen and surrounding areas and one of the things we have enjoyed most over the years is getting to know our customers. Many have continued to come back to us for their servicing and repairs, while others have found us through recommendations from family, friends and other local motorists. That repeat business and word of mouth means a lot to us. It reflects the trust our customers place in our team to provide honest advice, quality workmanship and practical recommendations for their vehicles. Experienced Mechanics You Can Trust Our approach is straightforward: listen to the customer, properly assess the vehicle and explain what needs attention and why. We work on a wide range of makes and models, including passenger cars, four-wheel drives, diesel vehicles and light commercial vehicles.

We have particular experience with Japanese and Korean vehicles, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Suzuki, Isuzu, Hyundai and Kia, while also servicing many other makes and models.

As vehicles continue to change, so has our workshop. Car Service Canberra has experience servicing hybrid vehicles and is qualified and equipped to work on high-voltage vehicles, including plug-in electric vehicles, for appropriate servicing and repairs. This means existing customers can continue to use a workshop they know and trust when they change to a hybrid or EV.

We are also ARC authorised (AU53331) to carry out Automotive Air Conditioning work responsibly and in accordance with applicable requirements. Technicians have the skills and knowledge to correctly undertake service and repairs of refrigerated car air conditioning. More Than Just a Workshop We aim to be a workshop our customers can rely on for their ongoing vehicle care, from routine servicing and log book servicing through to diagnostics, brakes, steering and suspension, tyres and more complex repairs.

We can also assist with pre-purchase vehicle inspections, including a Comprehensive Vehicle Condition Report, helping buyers understand the condition of a vehicle before making a purchase.

For customers moving between states or needing vehicle inspections and roadworthy certificates, our team can also assist with relevant NSW and ACT inspection and certification requirements, depending on the vehicle and circumstances.

As a Repco Authorised Service centre, Car Service Canberra is part of a nationwide network of independent automotive workshops. Eligible work is backed by a Nationwide Warranty, giving our customers additional peace of mind when their vehicle is serviced or repaired with us. A Local Workshop Built Around Relationships While the business has evolved since Jake and Monique took ownership in 2018, our focus remains the same: provide honest advice, take pride in our workmanship and treat customers with the respect we would expect ourselves.

We know that choosing a mechanic is about trust. You need to know that the person looking after your vehicle understands what they are doing, will explain things clearly and will tell you when something genuinely needs attention.

That is the kind of relationship we work hard to build with every customer who comes through our doors.

If you are looking for a local, family-owned workshop for car servicing, maintenance or repairs in Mitchell and the surrounding Canberra area, we would be happy to look after you and your vehicle. You can rely on us to do the little things that make a difference!

New Car Service in Mitchell

When the Australian summer heat arrives, your car’s air conditioning quickly becomes more than a comfort feature. A well-maintained A/C system helps keep the cabin cool, reduces humidity and can make long drives considerably more comfortable. But if the system isn't operating efficiently, it may also place unnecessary load on the engine.

At Car Service Canberra (AU53331), we provide professional car air conditioning servicing, inspections, regas and repairs for motorists in Mitchell and surrounding areas. Understanding a few of the key components can help you recognise when your A/C system needs attention. How Does Your Car's Air Conditioning Affect Fuel Use? Your vehicle's air conditioning system uses the engine to drive the A/C compressor. When the system is working correctly, the compressor cycles as required to maintain the desired cabin temperature.

However, low refrigerant levels, restricted airflow or a fault within the system can affect its efficiency. Refrigerant doesn't simply get "used up" in normal operation, so a noticeable reduction in cooling performance can sometimes indicate a leak or another underlying problem.

Rubber seals and connections are particularly important because they help contain the refrigerant within the system. As components age, seals can deteriorate and leaks may develop. Simply regassing a system without investigating why the refrigerant level has dropped may only provide a temporary solution.

A professional A/C inspection can help identify whether the system requires a regas, repair or further diagnosis. Don't Forget the Cabin Air Filter The cabin air filter is another small component that can have a big effect on your air conditioning performance.

Its job is to filter air entering the vehicle's cabin, trapping particles such as dust, pollen and other airborne contaminants. Over time, the filter can become clogged, restricting airflow through the vents.

You may notice weaker airflow even when the fan is operating normally, or find that the A/C takes longer to cool the cabin. A restricted filter can also contribute to unpleasant or musty smells.

Cabin air filter replacement intervals vary between vehicles, so always check the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general guide, inspection around every 15,000 to 20,000 kilometres may be appropriate, particularly if you regularly drive in dusty conditions. Warning Signs Your A/C Needs Attention Your air conditioning can provide some useful clues when something isn't working as it should. Look out for: Air isn't getting cold: Reduced cooling performance may indicate low refrigerant, restricted airflow or an A/C system fault. Unusual noises: Rattling, squealing or hissing sounds can point to problems with the compressor, belts or refrigerant system. Musty smells: Persistent odours may be associated with moisture, microbial build-up or a dirty cabin air filter. Water inside the vehicle: Condensation normally drains outside the vehicle. Water appearing around the footwell can indicate a blocked drain. Fogging windows: A/C systems help remove moisture from cabin air. Poor dehumidification can make clearing windows more difficult. Weak airflow: A blocked cabin filter, blower problem or restriction within the ventilation system may be responsible. If your A/C has gradually become less effective rather than suddenly failing, don't assume that another regas is all it needs. Having the system inspected can help determine the underlying cause. Why Regular A/C Servicing Is Worthwhile Your vehicle's air conditioning system is made up of several interconnected components, including the compressor, condenser, evaporator, refrigerant circuit, seals, electrical controls and cabin filter. Regular inspection gives these components an opportunity to be checked before a minor issue develops into a more expensive repair.

A yearly A/C inspection can be particularly worthwhile before summer, when the system is likely to be working harder and for longer periods. It can also help maintain airflow, cabin comfort and system performance.

At Car Service Canberra, our team is Arctick authorised (AU53331) to carry out automotive air conditioning work, including refrigerant handling, in accordance with applicable environmental requirements. We can assess your system and recommend the appropriate service, whether that involves a regas, repair, inspection or cabin air filter replacement. Keep Your Cool This Summer You shouldn't have to turn your car into an oven just because summer has arrived. If your air conditioning isn't cooling like it used to, smells unusual, makes unfamiliar noises or has developed another problem, it's worth having it checked rather than waiting for a complete failure.

Booking an air conditioning inspection with Car Service Canberra in Mitchell can help identify issues and keep your vehicle's A/C system working efficiently when you need it most.

Stay comfortable, keep the windows clear and let your vehicle do the hard work of keeping you cool this summer.

Is Your Car Air Conditioning Costing You More Fuel?

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Car Service Canberra in Mitchell, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Car Service Canberra, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Car Service Canberra for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

Buying a used car can be exciting, but it can also become an expensive mistake if hidden mechanical or safety problems are missed. A vehicle can look immaculate, have a convincing service history and drive well during a short test drive while still having faults that could cost thousands of dollars to repair.

A pre-purchase vehicle inspection from Car Service Canberra in Mitchell provides an independent assessment before you commit to buying. The comprehensive safety and mechanical check is accompanied by a written report, helping you understand the vehicle's current condition and make a more informed decision. What Is a Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection? A pre-purchase inspection is a detailed examination of a used vehicle to identify existing faults, component wear and potential future repair requirements.

Depending on the vehicle, the inspection can include the: Engine and signs of oil or coolant leaks Transmission and driveline Brakes, steering and suspension Tyres and wheels Battery and charging systems Cooling system Exhaust and emissions components Electrical and electronic systems Lights and safety equipment Underbody for damage, leaks or corrosion A diagnostic scan may also identify stored fault codes that aren't obvious during a normal test drive.

For petrol and diesel vehicles, attention can be given to engine condition, cooling systems, turbochargers, exhaust systems and other components specific to the vehicle.

For Hybrid and EVs, the inspection can also consider the vehicle's electrical systems, warning lights, charging equipment, regenerative braking and other EV or hybrid-specific components. Where available and appropriate, additional battery diagnostic testing can provide further information about battery condition. Why Should You Inspect a Used Car? A test drive tells you how a vehicle feels on the road, but it can't reveal everything happening underneath it.

Worn suspension components, fluid leaks, brake problems, cooling-system issues or electronic faults may not become obvious until the vehicle is properly inspected. This is why an independent vehicle inspection can be a valuable step before purchasing a used car.

The inspection can help you: Avoid buying a vehicle with expensive faults Identify safety-related problems Understand upcoming maintenance requirements Negotiate the purchase price based on known repairs Compare different vehicles more confidently Decide whether the vehicle is suitable for your needs An inspection can't predict exactly how long a vehicle will last, but it can reduce the risk of buying an expensive problem. What About Diesel Vehicles? Diesel cars, SUVs, utes and 4WDs can be excellent choices for long-distance driving, towing and heavy-duty use. However, some diesel components can be costly when they require repairs.

A pre-purchase inspection can look for warning signs associated with turbochargers, DPFs, EGR systems, cooling systems, oil leaks and excessive mechanical wear.

This is particularly important when buying a high-kilometre diesel 4WD or work ute that may have previously been used for towing, carrying heavy loads or off-road driving. Don't Forget Hybrids and EVs More Australian buyers are now considering used Hybrid, plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EVs). These vehicles have many of the same safety and mechanical requirements as conventional cars, but they also have additional electrical systems that deserve consideration before purchase.

For a used Hybrid or EV, it's worth checking: High-voltage system warning lights Battery and electrical system condition Charging port and charging equipment Regenerative braking operation Tyres and suspension Conventional 12-volt battery Available battery warranty Diagnostic fault codes Battery condition is particularly important when buying a used EV or Hybrid. High-voltage batteries naturally lose capacity over time, which can affect driving range. A suitable battery health or State of Health (SoH) assessment may provide additional information, depending on the vehicle and available diagnostic equipment. What Other Components Could Be Affected? One problem can sometimes indicate another. For example, an overheating engine could involve more than just the radiator, while uneven tyre wear may point towards worn suspension or incorrect wheel alignment.

Similarly, brake problems on a Hybrid or EV may not present in exactly the same way as a conventional vehicle because regenerative braking can reduce the use of the mechanical brakes.

Finding these connections early can help you understand not only what is wrong, but what repairs may potentially be required next. Pre Purchase Inspections FAQs Should I inspect a car even if it has a full service history? Yes. A service history shows that maintenance has been carried out, but it doesn't guarantee the vehicle is currently free from faults. An independent inspection provides another assessment of its present condition. Should I have an EV battery tested before buying? It's worth asking about battery health, particularly on an older or high-kilometre EV. A suitable diagnostic assessment may provide information about battery State of Health, fault codes and other relevant data, depending on the vehicle. Should a Hybrid be inspected differently from a petrol car? A Hybrid still needs conventional checks of brakes, tyres, suspension, steering and other components, but it also has additional electrical and hybrid-specific systems that should be considered. What if the seller says the vehicle has just been serviced? That's useful information, but it shouldn't replace an independent inspection. A recent service doesn't necessarily identify every developing fault. Is a pre-purchase inspection the same as a roadworthy inspection? Not necessarily. A roadworthy or safety inspection is generally focused on whether a vehicle meets particular safety requirements. A pre-purchase inspection is intended to give a prospective buyer a broader understanding of the vehicle's mechanical condition and potential repair needs. Tips Before Buying a Used Vehicle Arrange an independent inspection before committing to the purchase. Ask to see service and maintenance records. Find out whether the vehicle has been used for towing or off-road driving. Check the age and condition of the tyres. Don't assume a clean engine bay means there are no leaks. Ask about outstanding warranty coverage. For an EV or Hybrid, ask about battery warranty and condition. For a diesel, ask about DPF, EGR and turbocharger maintenance. Consider likely repair and maintenance costs, not just the purchase price.
